This conference brings together experts to reflect upon the prospects for North American integration in the midst of global economic crisis and changing political alignments. Following the implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), and then the development of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP), North America has entered a third, uncertain, and unpredictable phase. NAFTA's prospects are doubtful and the original objectives of SPP seem to have failed, raising questions about the continent's future trilateral relationship.

This relationship obviously has policy relevance for Canada and Canada-U.S. relations. Participants will explore pressing themes

including: economic competitiveness and regulatory cooperation, the future of the SPP, defense and military cooperation, immigration and border control, drugs and human trafficking, trends in the continental energy, automobile and labor markets, pressures for bilateralism, and the future of the North American community in the absence of continental governance. Kennesaw State University, in Kennesaw, Georgia, will host the two-day conference in March 2010, in collaboration with the Centre for North American Politics and Society at Carleton University, Ottawa. The University of Toronto Press has contracted to print an edited manuscript of selected conference papers.
