Call for Papers For the Biennial Scholars Conference

The Canadian Foreign Policy journal, with support from the Norman Paterson School of International Affairs, NPSIA's Centre for Security and Defence Studies, and the Canadian International Council, will hold its regular, biennial conference for new scholars on Canada's international policies on Nov. 12-13, 2009.

The conference will feature papers by new scholars, defined as those who:

  1. are in the final stages of completion of a Ph.D. dissertation;
  2. have held a Ph.D. for seven years or less; or
  3. have held a tenure-track appointment in a university for seven years or less.

Scholars who fit the definition are invited to submit proposals to present papers on Canadian international policy issues related to trade, economics, politics, security, defence, development, environment, immigration, and intelligence.  Papers not specifically concerned with Canada's international policies, but which would be of particular interest to those in the field, will also be considered.

Proposals will be reviewed by a committee comprised of CFP's Editorial Team and recognized specialists in the field from CIC.

Those presenting papers at the conference will be encouraged to revise their papers for submission for review and subsequent publication in Canadian Foreign Policy, a refereed journal published by The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs. Participants may also be invited to produce policy briefs or submit their papers for inclusion in CIC publications.

Those submitting proposals will be advised by the end of May or early June 2009 if their proposals have been accepted for the conference.

Conference participants will be reimbursed for costs of travel and accommodation.

To Submit a Proposal

Proposals, in the form of a brief (up to 250 words) abstract should be sent by May 29, 2009 to Cathleen Schmidt by e-mail, as an attachment, or by mail:
