The International Watersheds Initiative: Implementing a New Paradigm for Transboundary Basins
Event Details
Since its establishment in 1909, the International Joint Commission (IJC) has sought innovative ways of fulfilling its mandate to prevent and resolve water disputes between Canada and the United States.
To this end, the IJC has developed and begun implementing its International Watersheds Initiative (IWI) over the past decade. The IWI was created on the premise that water resource and environmental problems can be anticipated, prevented, or resolved at the local level. Rather than simply measuring the quantity or quality of border lakes and rivers in isolation, the IWI promotes an integrated ecosystem approach to watershed preservation that acknowledges the complex interrelationships in the entire watershed.
Please join the Canada Institute and Environmental Change and Security Program for a presentation and discussion with Charles Lawson, Secretary, U.S. Section, International Joint Commission and Willem Brakel, Senior Adviser, International Joint Commission, on the findings of the IJC’s Third Report to Governments on the International Watershed Initiative. This report on the IWI summarizes accomplishments and progress made in building local capacity for implementing a watershed approach along the international boundary. It also outlines the Commission’s thinking on the future direction of the IWI, with recommended next steps.
