The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States
The Association for Canadian Studies in the United States (ACSUS) is a multi-disciplinary membership based organization committed to raising awareness and understanding of Canada and the bilateral relationship. ACSUS supports research and academic activity through its publications, conferences, and grant programs; promotes the academy through active advocacy and outreach; and positions the community by profiling the scope and diversity of research undertaken by the ACSUS membership in the humanities and social sciences.
Central to ACSUS is the goal of improving understanding of Canada's history, literature, arts, peoples, cultures, politics, economy, and role in the international community.
ACSUS was formally established during a conference held at Duke University in 1971. Until 1975, the Association was managed through the Canadian Center at the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) of the Johns Hopkins University. Between 1975 and 1984, ACSUS was an affiliate of Meridian House International. In 1982, through the generous assistance of the Exxon Education Foundation, ACSUS established its secretariat in Washington, D.C., and in 1984, ACSUS became completely independent and relocated to the National Center for Higher Education; the relocation was due in part to the Association's rapid and dramatic growth and the assistance of the William H. Donner Foundation. Today ACSUS is located at 2030 M Street NW across the hall from the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs.
